Transportation

Anyone who drives at rush hour in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke knows that we have a serious problem with traffic congestion. We all see it: car after car slowly moving with only one person or stuck waiting for traffic lights to change. This gridlock is an issue that comes up again and again when I’m doorknocking in our riding.

To solve this problem, we need much better public transportation. Clean, fast, and frequent transit options are essential if we want to convince people to get out of their vehicles. Let’s make public transit an option that people want to use.

The status quo is not good enough. The old line parties love building more highways and overpasses on South Vancouver Island, but we know that these are not long term solutions: they just speed people to the next red light. The McKenzie overpass is now scheduled to cost $96 million, 11 million over budget and over a year behind schedule. As our population grows, we need more cost effective solutions to traffic congestion.

Here are the core elements of a long term solution to unclogging our roads in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke and south Vancouver Island.

  • Expand public transit infrastructure so that it delivers clean, fast and frequent service. This means more buses, park and rides, bus lanes, and accessible routes.

  • Increase pedestrian, cycling, and car-sharing initiatives.

  • Enable smart-growth development with walkable communities and town centres linked by transit.

  • Bring back the Blue Boat ferry between Belmont Park and CFB Esquimalt.

  • Encourage government to shift offices out of the downtown core.

  • Promote telecommuting and work-at-home options to cut costs for employers, reduce energy consumption, and relieve traffic congestion.

  • Provide local governments with predictable and stable transportation funding so they can plan for long term growth.

Our party is funded by grassroots supporters like you who chip in what they can, when they can.
